Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was born between 31 October 1450 and 30 October 1451, died 20 May 1506, was an Italian explorer. He asked the Kings of Portugal for supporting a travel in which he will try to find a new trade route to Asia, Columbus told to him that the his beliefs in which he though the Earth wasn't flat, that it was round.
The Portuguese Kings didn't though the same, so they denied it to Columbus, so he asked the Catholic Monarchs to support him and to affort the voyages to explore and to try to go to Asia for the spices. So, Catholic Monarchs believed him and decided to support him and approve it. The expedition started on 3 of August of 1492, it started in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) with 3 ships; La Pinta, La Niña and La Santamaria, with a crew of 90 men, that most of them were recruited in jail, and promissed them that if they arrived a new territory, they will be free, although the greatest part of the prisoners were afraid of going and they staied at prison.
Christopher Columbus and his crew arrived in a new territory on the 12 of October of 1492, they though they had reached Cipango (Japan). But,in what they arrived was an island of an undiscovered country, later this island was going to be called San Salvador, because the island save their lives, because if they didn't find the island probably, they would die of hunger and of thirst.
Columbus did 3 more travels that unexplored territory, to stablish Castilian domination and to conquer more territories, that would be dominated by him. In his third travel he found a faster and safer route.
After his fourth and last travel, he was brough to Castile where he was accused of abusing of the indigen people, that was considered a crime because the indigenous population were considered Castilian citizens, he didn´t wanted to baptise them, because, if they weren't baptise, thy weren't considered Castilians at all, because of the Catholicism. He became innocent in the trial.
He died 2 years after the trial without knowing he had discovered a new continent, the name of America is given by the creator of the first map, that was called Americo.
The Catholic Monarchy and Christopher Columbus
The Catholic Monarchs were selected by Christopher columbus after the King of Portugal rejected him, to show the his project of trying to reach the India by a fastest way.
At that time, the Catholic Monarchy were fighting against the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, so when the battle finished and the Catholic Monarchs won, they accepted the proposal of Columbus, the expedition was going to start the 3 of August of 1492, in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva). But after it started, they had to sign kind of a contract if the expedition gone well and if it reached the territory. These contracts were called Capitulaciones of SanCapituta Fe.
Capitulaciones of Santa Fe
Capitulaciones of Santa Fe were kind of a contracts signed the 17 of April of 1492, in Santa Fe (Huelva) In these Capitulaciones, there are the agreements with Cristobal Colon related with his expedition.
In the document, the titles of admiral, viceroy and general gobernor of all the territories he will descover, or gain during his life were given to him. They also gave to him a tithe of all merchandises he found.
The Capitulaciones, were kind of an anticipated deal of the new contienet that Colon was about to discover.
With those beneficts, Colon became of a very high class very quick.
These Capitulaciones were redacted by Juan de Coloma, the original one (that had been lost), was signed by both monarchs.
